“Is the Hood Really Good?”
By Ronel XBey
Based on the most recent events in Hip-Hop we at Kapital Magazine have decided to take a harsh look at our community and the effects of rap. Hip-Hop, as I have previously stated, was created to give the people a voice to express themselves and an outlet to vent their frustrations due to the economic pressures of the times. The music resonated into the communities. The people of those communities appreciated the realness of the message and used this energy to stay focused. The messages in the music circulated throughout the community and everyone took care of each other.
Today we have a totally different thing going on. The music that’s being made and the artist that are making it are not genuinely concerned about our communities and they are suffering from it. Tekashi 69 was and is supposed to reflect and represent today’s Hip-Hop (rap). His recent troubles and actions justify my previous statements.
The message that’s being conveyed today is that no one cares about anything and that anything you do is ok, which it’s not. The Black communities have always been the test grounds for experiments (check your history). We now can see clear evidence that the art of Hip-Hop has been lost for the commercial appeal of corporate America and we are the ones getting the short end of the stick, the hood.
We have to be consciously aware nowadays that the entertainment business is just that, entertainment. The things that are portrayed and the lifestyle glorified by the actors (rappers) are meant to further the delay of us rising as a people. By it being black history month, I found it necessary to address this topic. We have far too long allowed America to control our narrative and because of that we have always been controlled. The hood will always be the hood, however we should want to experience a more vibrant and uplifting daily life. Situations happen and nothing is perfect, but we should always look to uplift the whole instead of accepting what’s given.
