“D/R PERIOD AND ROCKBOYZ GZ FLY TY - MAKING A HOME FOR ARTISTS AT ROCKBOY RECORDS”
By MJ Savino
Record labels and the business aspect of the music industry will ultimately dictate the success of artists. D/R Period, Legendary Producer and CEO of Rockboy Records, and Fly Ty, President of Rockboy Records and front man of Rockboy Gz, offer a package that is almost extinct in today’s day an age. They offer endless possibilities, artist development, growth, and most importantly a home saturated with a love for the culture and a passion for music and success!
MJ: They say opposites attract, and in the case of your business relationship that statement is accurate! Fly Ty for years you’ve been notoriously known for executing that New York hard-core, gritty music. While D/R is more on the reserved side working on a spiritual project! How did your worlds come together? Talk about some learning experiences along the way, as well as some challenges.
D/R: We’ve been linked our whole lives; we’ve always been family. Fly Ty was always there; he was an artist but eager to learn the business. He definitely proved himself from front man of the Street Team to running the label. His growth has been tremendous! What is crucial that we both live by is not to get caught up in feelings or emotions, have an open mind, and goal setting.
Fly Ty: D/R and I always had an unbreakable bond, like he said we are family. I remember he had a studio in Brooklyn and I was taking notes on how he conducted and built business. I was there figuring a way in. D/R took notice and put me to work, the rest is history. There has been a lifetime of lessons along the way. I don’t mean to sound cliché but “we started from the bottom” is 100% real. D/R has taught me everything from reading contracts, accepting that all money isn’t good money, how to maintain a business, and of course remaining humble through it all!
MJ: I can go on for days about the contributions you both have made to Hip Hop, not just on the side of music but I’m speaking culturally. D/R you are responsible for the success of timeless hits by Nas, Jay Z, M.O.P, countless major motion films, your resume is outstanding! Fly Ty as front man of Rockboy Gz you have been performing and creating music for quite some time and sharing stages with Hip Hop legends and pioneers, not to mention bringing on new talent. What is the key to success? What is the key for constant movement and growth? What is the key to longevity?
Fly Ty: The best way to answer that is simple, by having multiple keys! A lot of the times people come into the industry pushing only one talent. However, it becomes evident they become successful in a whole other lane that they never thought of riding in. If you aren’t putting in 100% all those keys will fall to waste side. In terms of longevity you must take pride in your work and accept the up’s and downs. Learn to ride the way all the way through!
D/R: Put God first, always! I will also say this, never stop the music and act out what you believe. Trust in yourself to step out on faith. You have to believe in what you give for others to believe.
MJ: Let’s take it all the way back…When did you fall in love with Hip Hop? How did the culture and the elements speak to you? Talk about that pivotal moment in your lives when you knew this was it!
D/R: It was inevitable. My house was filled with musicians. My parents both invested their time in helping artist to develop. They taught me, along with education, the importance of music and instruments and the fundamentals of it all. You can say since day one I was destined to do music. I am blessed to be a man of many traits.
Fly Ty: For me it wasn’t Hip Hop at first. My father sang in groups and bands, most famous The Drifters, and I would tag along to rehearsals. That’s what first opened my eyes. Hearing the beauty coming out of instruments completely mesmerized me and sparked that interest. But what officially stamped it all was my participation in junior high showcases. Since that moment of the crowd reactions and the love they showed, I never turned back!
MJ: Rockboy Records has been thriving for quite some time under Sony Entertainment. You both have seen artists come and go. You offer artists much more than deals or label signing. Rockboy Records fully comprehends the music industry from all aspects and is not naïve in anyway or lacking any fundamentals. Take this time to let the readers know why Rockboy Records stands out from other labels, and why as the culture changes and grows Rockboy Records is not left stagnant.
D/R: Rockboy Records is a unique label. We do things differently. We have a connection with our artists, a passion to the art and the craft, and we never give up on creativity. If you are forced to work in an uncomfortable environment you can’t create! Our label is not just a business it is a family, a home, and a house you can build upon. Unlike other labels we pay attention to the times. Our artists will deliver what your ears are accustomed to but will also give you something new.
Fly Ty: To that I will add we don’t sacrifice our dignity or sell our souls. Everything at Rockboy Records is 100% real, and genuinely heartfelt. So often the game changes once money comes into play and the love for the art and grassroots of it all is lost. Like James Brown said, “It’s gotta be funky”. You have to feel it!
MJ: What is in store for Rockboy Records in 2018! Rumors have it that D/R will be coming to the forefront a bit more. Who are some artists we should be on the lookout for and getting familiar with?
D/R: I’m ready to bring it back to the forefront alongside my brothers and sisters. When you are in the background doing business so long, you realize it’s time to lead by example. That is something I pride myself in. Like I mentioned earlier D/R is a man of many traits. There is so much growth right now with the label and the artists, it’s overwhelmingly incredible. As for myself I am dusting off my DJ and Artist hat.
Fly Ty: Like D/R said there is so much growth right now. D/R is kicking it off with The Breakfast Mix Radio Show every Saturday morning on 96.1 FM. Computa, Mob Deep affiliate, will be releasing an album titled after his mother, “Alma” produced entirely by D/R and Jonny P. New to the label is songstress Ms Shica, which I’m very excited about. I can’t leave out Berry Goodz who will be releasing a solo project this year. Rockboy Gz which was once a small group, has now turned into a lifestyle with artists from Brooklyn, Queens, North Carolina, Rochester NY, Florida, DC, and Connecticut. As the president of Rockboy Records and front man of Rockboy Gz you can find me in the upcoming web series “Triumph” this year. Zay the Doe Boy is our Prince of the label as producer and artists and will be releasing his album “Carry On”. We also have O.C, Odd Couple, for the younger generation and new wave of music who are twin brothers delivering that new sound of rap. You can also catch us in the movie “Do Something Wit It”, soundtrack produced by D/R and featuring our R&B Group 120…We are working!
MJ: How has Hip Hop altered your lives? If it wasn’t for Hip Hop and music do you think your paths would have crossed?
D/R: For me music and Hip Hop hasn’t changed my life, it saved it!
Fly Ty: I can provide for my family without going to jail. I am leaving a legacy behind for my son.
MJ: Please take a moment and shed some knowledge on the importance of a having a team, support, business ethics, an open mind, and being versatile is for those striving to make a career in the music industry.
D/R: Nothing can be successful without a team. Even a boxer has a team before and after he enters that ring. God has blessed me with an incredible team who whole heartedly support one another.
Fly Ty: I’ll add that you have to be versatile. If you are stuck in one zone or one-time period there is no room for growth or progression in the industry, or in life. Because of the changes with distribution the attention span of fans has changed. Artists must adapt to the change to be successful.
MJ: On behalf of The Kapital Hip Hop Culture Magazine we want to say salute! We wish you much continued success, and thank you for keeping it Hip Hop!
